how long you plan to stay, 半年往返 is usually a little higher than short
term stay.
You can try to get the ticket by buying points from someone on mitbbs, the
going price is around $1,000 for what you want. (UA IAD <--> PEK).

1）票价low season，你要买9月来美国的票依然是 hi-season，要到9月中旬以后，回
中国的时间在12月，也是旅行高峰。
2）旅行时段，一般折扣票价都要求30－45天之内往返，要求越严格，票价往往越便宜
，半年往返的票，基本没什么优惠了。
3）没有同期可比性，机票受油价，货币价格，附加税各种因素影响。最主要的决定因

I am guessing that is up to the seller or negotiable between you two.
I have seen many listings for $1,000 + fee for UA ticket, other airline (
like Delta) might be a little less.
But UA ticket can be changed without any penalty, some other airline will
charge a fee.
Most important, only the UA have direct flight from IAD to PEK, so if your
mom don't speak English, this is the best choice.

改期不是要交250美元 is NOT always the case, that depends on the class of
tickets bought.
A = Discounted Fare First Class. Round The World First is booked in this
class.
B = Almost Full Fare Economy with minimal restrictions - also used Star *
RTW
C = Full Fare Unrestricted Business Class
D = Discounted Fare Business - used also on all "Business" Class Star RTW
fares
E = Some low web/discount fares from early 2005. Now officially elevated to
above H class!
F = Full Fare Unrestricted First Class
G = Travel Industry Economy Class fares
H = Higher level Economy Class with few restrictions. Some "RTW" coach is H
I = Business Class STAR AWARD TICKET (Booked as 'XC' class on UA)
J = Paid Business Class
K = Seasonal Economy Promotional Fares/Reduced Fare Gov’t contract etc
L = Discount Fare Economy with a lot of restrictions
M = Almost Full Fare Economy with few restrictions
N = Economy Class UA AWARD TICKET (Booked as 'NY' class on UA; available
only to super-elite)
O = First Class STAR AWARD TICKET (Booked as 'XF' class on UA)
P = Premium USA Transcon First Class on 3 classers
Q = Discount Economy with moderate restrictions.
S = Real Lowball coach with lot of restrictions. Reports that some are not
mile earning ex UK/Brazil etc.
T = Heavy discount Fare Economy - often with a lot of restrictions
V = Discount Fare Economy often with a lot of restrictions
W = Discount Fare Economy often with many restrictions
X = Economy Class STAR AWARD TICKET (Booked as 'XY' on UA)
Y = Full Fare unrestricted Economy class
Z = Heavily discounted Business Class - generally NOT upgradeable.
