It has been called the height of Elizabethan English and transformed the
world by helping to solidify English as the world’s dominant language. Its
phrases are still in common use today. It is the King James Bible and it
turns 400 next year.
While Christianity has seen many English Bibles come and go, the King James
still remains continuously in print since 1611. And there is a reason this
book has survived them all.
In 1604, Puritan John Reynolds petitioned the king for a new English
translation of the Bible asking if there might be a new translation. The
king approved the request and issued a resolution stating that, “a
translation be made of the whole Bible, as consonant as can be to the
original Hebrew and Greek; and this to be set out and printed, without any
marginal notes, and only to be used in all churches of England in time of
divine service.”
The King James translators did not merely create a new translation, but it
was in actuality a revision of the previous bibles that came before it,
including the Tyndale Bible which was first printed in 1524. The finished
project was, in essence, a final revision of a translation begun 80 years
earlier.
The translators consisted of 47 men who were divided into six camps at
Oxford, Cambridge and Westminster. The biographies of the translators were
impressive. Lancelot Andrews made it a point to take a month at Easter to
learn a new language learning most of the languages of Europe. John Spencer
was a Greek lecturer at nineteen years of age.
The King James was translated at a time when the English language was still
in flux, especially in regard to the spelling of certain words. The King
James Bible aided greatly in the standardization of the English language.
Many of its phrases are still in use today such as, "labor of love," - "at
his wits end," and "by the skin of your teeth." Once printed, it quickly
supplanted all of the other English bibles that had come before it. Even its
critics have called it the crown jewel of the English language.
It was under this translation that Britain attained the height of its
greatness and had an empire on which the sun never set. The King James was
the Bible used by our founding fathers and is quoted in many of our founding
documents. An inscription on the Liberty Bell is from a King James Bible
verse; Leviticus 25:10. The King James Bible was quoted in outer space when
the Apollo 8 crew took turns quoting the first ten verses in Genesis.
While critics have often complained the King James is difficult to read, a
sampling of verses using the Fiesch-Kincaid grade level indicator test
reveals that the King James ranks easier than modern translations in 23 out
of 26 comparisons. The average reading level is between 6th and 7th grade
compared to most other translations which average one to two grades higher.
What is also amazing is how many things still remain unknown about the
translation. Dr. Bill Grady, in his book, “Given By Inspiration,” points
out
that while everyone agrees the King James was published in 1611 there is no
record of exactly when it was printed as it was never officially entered
into the record by the “Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper
Makers.” Grady goes on to say the King James Bible “is the most printed
book
in the history of the world, as well as the only book with over one billion
copies in print and we don’t even have a formal record that it was ever
published.”
Although the King James Bible has many critics, every new bible translation
is compared to it. One thing is certain; after 400 years, the King James
still remains the world’s best-seller. | T****i

的狂热举动，这本小小的册子，曾风靡全国、遍及全世界１５０多个国家和地区，创造
了我国图书出版发行数量的最高纪录，有“东方的《圣经》”之称。从１９６４年５月
问世到１９７９年２月１２日中宣部发文通知停止发行时止，在短短的１５年内，仅国
家出版社正式出版的总印数就有十亿五千五百多万册，如果加上“文革”初期“造反”
组织和许多机关、团体、部队、厂矿等翻印和私自编印的，其数量之巨大更为惊人。
