Of the Perseverance of the Saints
I. They, whom God hath accepted in his Beloved, effectually called, and sanc
tified by his Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the sta
te of grace, but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eterna
lly saved.[334]
II. This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, bu
t upon the immutability of the decree of election, flowing from the free and
unchangeable love of God the Father;[335] upon the efficacy of the merit an
d intercession of Jesus Christ,[336] the abiding of the Spirit, and of the s
eed of God within them,[337] and the nature of the covenant of grace:[338] f
rom all which ariseth also the certainty and infallibility thereof.[339]
III. Nevertheless, they may, through the temptations of Satan and of the wor
ld, the prevalency of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the m
eans of their preservation, fall into grievous sins;[340] and, for a time, c
ontinue therein:[341] whereby they incur God’s displeasure,[342] and grieve
his Holy Spirit,[343] come to be deprived of some measure of their graces a
nd comforts,[344] have their hearts hardened,[345] and their consciences wou
nded;[346] hurt and scandalize others,[347] and bring temporal judgments upo
n themselves.[348]
[334] Philippians 1:6. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hat
h begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. 2
Peter 1:10. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your call
ing and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. John
10:28-29. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, ne
ither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me
, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father?s h
and. 1 John 3:9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed
remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 Peter 1:5,
9. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to b
e revealed in the last time.... Receiving the end of your faith, even the sa
lvation of your souls.
[335] 2 Timothy 2:18-19. Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that th
e resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheles
s the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth th
em that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart fr
om iniquity. Jeremiah 31:3. The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Y
ea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindnes
s have I drawn thee.
[336] Hebrews 10:10, 14. By the which will we are sanctified through the off
ering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.... For by one offering he ha
th perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Hebrews 13:20-21. Now the Go
d of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shep
herd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you p
erfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellp
leasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ev
er. Amen. Hebrews 9:12-15. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by
his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eterna
l redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes o
f an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the fles
h: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit o
ffered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to
serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new test
ament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that
were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the pro
mise of eternal inheritance. Romans 8:33-39. Who shall lay any thing to the
charge of God?s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth?
It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the
right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate
us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution,
or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake
we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved
us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor princ
ipalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, n
or depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love
of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. John 17:11, 24. And now I am no
more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Fath
er, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may
be one, as we are.... Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given m
e, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast giv
en me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. Luke 22:32. B
ut I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art conver
ted, strengthen thy brethren. Hebrews 7:25. Wherefore he is able also to sav
e them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to
make intercession for them.
[337] John 14:16-17. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you anoth
er Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth;
whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth hi
m: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 1 John 2:
27. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye n
eed not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of al
l things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye sh
all abide in him. 1 John 3:9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin;
for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

rish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 2 Thessalonians 3:3.

John 2:19. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had b
een of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, th
at they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

ot what thou sayest.... And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the
man.... Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And
immediately the cock crew.

usness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we
have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.... And there i
s none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of
thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of o
ur iniquities.... Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity
for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. 2 Samuel 11:2

5:2-4, 6. I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that k
nocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for
my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. I have
put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I
defile them? My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowe
ls were moved for him.... I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdra
wn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I
could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
