一．上帝在圣经中所吩咐的那些事才是善行（弥6:8；罗12:2；来13:21）；没有圣经根
据，只是因着人盲目的热心，或者假借善良的意图而由人所虚构的事，并非善行（太15
:9；赛29:13；彼前1:18；罗10:2；约16:2；撒上15:21－23）。
二．这些顺服上帝诫命而行的善行，乃是真实和活泼的信心的果子和证据（雅2:18，22
）；信徒藉此表示感恩（诗116:12，13；彼前2:9），坚固确信（约壹2:3，5；彼后1:5
－10），造就弟兄（林后9:2；太5:16），尊荣福音（多2:5，9－12；提前6:1），堵住
敌人的口（彼前2:15），并荣耀上帝(彼前2:12；腓1:11；约15:8)，他们原是祂的工作
，在基督耶稣里造成的，为要叫他们行善（弗2:10），以便有成圣的果子，最终得享永
生（罗6:22）。
三．他们行善的能力绝不是出于自己，乃是完全从基督的灵来的（约15:4－5；结36:26
-27）。他们为能行善，除已经领受的诸般美德[5]之外，还需要圣灵的实际影响在他们
里面运行，叫他们立志行事，成就祂的美意（腓2:13；4:13；林后3:5）；然而他们不可
因此而疏懒，以为除非受圣灵特别的感动，就无须履行任何责任；反倒应当殷勤，将上
帝在他们里面的美德再如火挑旺起来（腓2:12；来6:11-12；彼后1:3，5，10，11；赛6
4:7；提后1:6；徒26:6，7；犹20，21）。
四．就是那些在顺服上达到今生可能达到的最高境界的人，也不能立份外的功德，并且
他们所行的不会过于上帝所要求的，反而大大亏欠当尽的本分（路17:10；尼:13:22；伯
9:2，3；加5:17）。
五．我们不能靠最善的行为从上帝手中赚得赦罪，或永生，因为这种行为与将来的荣耀
极不相称，而且我们与上帝之间又有天壤之别，我们藉着这些善行，既不能使祂受益，
也不能补偿我们以前的罪债（罗3:20；4:2，4，6；弗2:8，9；多3:5－7；罗8:18；诗1
6:2；伯22:2-3；35:7-8）。我们尽力而为，只不过是尽当尽的本分，我们乃是无用的仆
人（路17:10）。它们之所以是善的，是因从上帝的灵发出（加5:22-23）。同时它们又
因是由我们行出来，便被诸多软弱和瑕疵玷污，并与之混杂，以致经不起上帝严厉的审
判（赛64:6；加5:17；罗7:15，18；诗143:2；130:3）。
六．然而，信徒本人既因基督得蒙悦纳，他们的善行也在祂里面得蒙悦纳（弗1:6；彼前
2:5；出28:38；创4:4；来11:4），这不是说，他们今生在上帝眼中完全没有瑕疵，无可
指摘了（伯9:20；诗143:2）；乃是说，祂既在祂儿子里看待他们，便乐意对那虽不免有
许多软弱和瑕疵，却是出于至诚的善行，欣然接纳并予以报答（来13:20，21；林后8:1
2；来6:10；太25:21，23）。
七．虽然未重生者所行的事，或许本身是上帝所吩咐的，并且对己对人都有益处（王
下10:30-31；王上21:27，29；腓1:15，16，18）；但是，因为它们不是从那被信心洁净
了的心发出来的（创4:3－5；来11:4，6），也不是按照上帝的话用正当的方式行出来的
（林前13:3；赛1:12），又不是为了荣耀上帝这正当的目的（太6:2，5，16）；所以它
们都是有罪的，既不能取悦上帝，也不能使人配受上帝的恩典（该2:14；多1:15；摩5:

OF GOOD WORKS
1. Good works are only such as God hath commanded in his holy Word, and not
such as, without the warrant thereof, are devised by men, out of blind zeal,
or upon any pretense of good intention.
2. These good works, done in obedience to God's commandments, are the fruits
and evidences of a true and lively faith: and by them believers manifest th
eir thankfulness, strengthen their assurance, edify their brethren, adorn th
e profession of the gospel, stop the mouths of the adversaries, and glorify
God, whose workmanship they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto, that, ha
ving their fruit unto holiness, they may have the end, eternal life.
3. Their ability to do good works is not at all of themselves, but wholly fr
om the Spirit of Christ. And that they may be enabled thereunto, beside the
graces they have already received, there is required an actual influence of
the same Holy Spirit, to work in them to will, and to do, of his good pleasu
re: yet are they not hereupon to grow negligent, as if they were not bound t

e glory to come; and the infinite distance that is between us and God, whom,
by them, we can neither profit, nor satisfy for the debt of our former sins
, but when we have done all we can, we have done but our duty, and are unpro
fitable servants: and because, as they are good, they proceed from his Spiri
t; and as they are wrought by us, they are defiled, and mixed with so much w
eakness and imperfection, that they cannot endure the severity of God's judg
ment.
6. Notwithstanding, the persons of believers being accepted through Christ,
their good works also are accepted in him; not as though they were in this l
ife wholly unblamable and unreprovable in God's sight; but that he, looking
upon them in his Son, is pleased to accept and reward that which is sincere,
although accompanied with many weaknesses and imperfections.
7. Works done by unregenerate men, although for the matter of them they may

Of Good Works
I. Good works are only such as God hath commanded in his holy Word,[306] and
not such as, without the warrant thereof, are devised by men, out of blind
zeal, or upon any pretense of good intention.[307]
II. These good works, done in obedience to God’s commandments, are the frui
ts and evidences of a true and lively faith:[308] and by them believers mani

s toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the
LORD. 1 Peter 2:9. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an h
oly nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him
who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
[310] 1 John 2:3, 5. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his
commandments.... But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of Go
d perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 2 Peter 1:5-10. And beside t
his, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge

I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and y

re men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is
in heaven.
[312] Titus 2:5, 9-12. To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedie
nt to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.... Exhort
servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in a
ll things; not answering again; Not purloining, but showing all good fidelit
y; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For th
e grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righte

ks of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved
us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he
shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justifie
d by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal lif
e. Romans 8:18. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are no
t worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Psalm
16:2. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness
extendeth not to thee. Job 22:2-3. Can a man be profitable unto God, as he
that is wise may be profitable unto himself? Is it any pleasure to the Almig
hty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways
perfect? Job 35:7-8. If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what re
ceiveth he of thine hand? Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy
righteousness may profit the son of man.
[322] Luke 17:10. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things w
hich are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that
which was our duty to do.
[323] Galatians 5:22-23. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, lo
ngsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such
there is no law.
[324] Isaiah 64:6. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteous
nesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities,
like the wind, have taken us away. Galatians 5:17. For the flesh lusteth ag
ainst the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary t
he one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Romans 7
:15, 18. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; b

at which is good I find not. Psalm 143:2. And enter not into judgment with t
hy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. Psalm 130:3.
If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O LORD, who shall stand?
[325] Ephesians 1:6. To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hat
h made us accepted in the beloved. 1 Peter 2:5. Ye also, as lively stones, a
re built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sac
rifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Exodus 28:38. And it shall be up
on Aaron?s forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, wh
ich the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shal
l be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD. Ge
nesis 4:4. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of t
he fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering. Hebr
ews 11:4. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cai
n, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his
gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
[326] Job 9:20. If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I s
ay, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. Psalm 143:2. And enter no
t into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be ju
stified.
[327] Hebrews 13:20-21. Now the God of peace, that brought again from the de
ad our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of th
e everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will,
working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ
; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 2 Corinthians 8:12. For if there
be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and n
ot according to that he hath not. Hebrews 6:10. For God is not unrighteous t
o forget your work and labour of love, which ye have showed toward his name,
in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. Matthew 25:21, 2
3. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou h
ast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things
good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I wil
l make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
[328] 2 Kings 10:30-31. And the Lord said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done
well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the h
ouse of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fo
urth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. But Jehu took no heed to
walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart: for he departe

d preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will. Philipp
ians 1:16, 18. The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing

ether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice

[329] Genesis 4:5. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And
Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. Hebrews 11:4, 6. By faith Ab
el offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtain
ed witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he
being dead yet speaketh.... But without faith it is impossible to please him
er of them that diligently seek him.
[330] 1 Corinthians 13:3. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,
and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth
me nothing. Isaiah 1:12. When ye come to appear before me, who hath required
this at your hand, to tread my courts?
[331] Matthew 6:2, 5, 16. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound
a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the st
reets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have the
ir reward.... And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are
streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have the
ir reward.... Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad cou
ntenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to f
ast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
[332] Haggai 2:14. Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so
is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their han

not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth m

desire not the knowledge of thy ways. What is the Almighty, that we should s
erve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? Matthew 25:41

I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no
drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not
saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least
of these, ye did it not to me. Matthew 23:23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pha
risees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have
omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these
