For the federal tax return, we can get $11,900 Standard Deduction and $7,600
(3,800 x 2) Exemptions from the gross income.
But for the CA tax return, we only can get $7,682 (3,841 x 2) California
standard deduction from the gross income.
So for the CA tax return, we need pay tax for the $11,818 difference between
the federal and CA income (11,900+7,600-7,682).
Do I misunderstand something? What should I do? Thanks. | f*******n 发帖数: 12623 | 2 No, this doesn't make much sense.
Federal tax and state tax are separate. They are both calculated based on
your total income. You pay federal tax on your income plus also state tax on
your income.
So suppose you make $50000. For federal tax you have $11900 standard
deduction and $7600 exemption, so you are left with $50000 - $11900 - $7600
= $30500 taxable income. And then you calculate the tax on that based on the
federal tax brackets. In this case the federal tax is $3709.
You also have to pay California taxes. For California tax you have $7682
standard deduction. California also has exemptions, but they work
differently than federal -- California exemptions are applied to the tax,
not the income. So anyway, you have $50000 - $7682 = $42318 taxable income,
and the tax comes out to $836. Then you apply the exemption ($104 x 2 = $208
), so you are left with a tax of $628. | q*a 发帖数: 518 | 3 Thanks.
That means the total CA income (before the 208$ deduction) will be 11818$
higher than the total Federal income.
The additional 11818$ income difference will cause much more CA tax than the
208$ deduction.

completely different. Why are you comparing them at all? It doesn't make
sense.

exemption)是一样的,但是taxible income一般都是不一样的,因为state和federal
的deduction和exemption都不一样,其实前面那位已经说得很明白了!
