Potassium (potash) cannot be made, cannot be substituted, is necessary to
grow all life forms, and is mined and depleted. It’s a scary set of
statements. Former Soviet states and Canada have more than 70% of the potash
. The monopoly actually helped to reduce demand for the short-term when
scientists can find ways for replacement. But now it will just run out
faster.
With a world population of 7 billion, headed toward 10 billion or higher by
the end of the century, the sellers are essentially betting that reserves (
and resources) of potassium are plentiful enough that there is no potential
problem for the next several hundred years and beyond.
Otherwise, the price of potash has to rise decades from now, which would
push the cost of food production to a point where the urban poor living on a
$1 or $2 a day can no longer afford to feed themselves.
Stories like this just proves that human being is destined for tragedies.
The few firms in Russia and China are so focusing on their short-term
profits that they are ignoring the long-term consequence to millions if not
billions of life in the world (just like the story of corn ethanol fuel).
