Job Description:
General: Specializes in the application of statistics and/or computer
technology to epidemiological studies, laboratory studies, prevention
research, and other selected forms of studies/research conducted and/or
supported by Public Health. Requires thorough knowledge and use of
commercial statistical software packages.
Experience with sample size calculations and methodologies. Knowledge of
surveillance and case-control study design and analysis. Experience with a
variety of different groups in various disciplines. Thorough understanding
of statistical methods including, but not limited to, linear, logistic, and
conditional logistic regression models, as well as survey statistics and
survival analysis.
Detailed: The employee will provide support programming services for high-
priority and policy-relevant analytic projects on nutrition and health by
providing SAS and SUDAAN programs. The programs will tabulate data needed
for analyses of selected variables relevant to current nutrition policy
discussions, such as analyses of nutrient intake from diet and/or
supplements, behaviors related to diet, and nutritional biochemistries. All
SAS programs used in these analyses must be well-documented and include
information about input and output files, the purpose of the program, and
major steps in the program. The employee shall review analyses and recommend
any revisions or additional steps needed. The analyses must be completed on
a mutually agreeable schedule. The employee shall take the lead role on
analytic projects to be mutually agreed upon, working with co-authors to
develop an analytic plan, conducting analyses, developing posters or
presentations for scientific conferences, and preparing manuscripts suitable
for publication. The employee will provide consultation on the selection,
use and interpretation of statistical methods; recommend procedures for the
estimation of variances of means, proportions and differences; and conduct
analyses agreed upon by the government analytic team.
The employee will provide support to government international activities,
utilizing datasets to support Center international projects. Data
extraction will include external datasets from the Census Bureau, the CDC
WONDER system, the HRSA Area Resources File, and others, as well as a
variety of NCHS datasets. The employee tabulate data needed for analysis or
for submission to international organizations. The employee will review
data requests and suggest modifications as appropriate. The employee review
external and internal datasets and report any data anomalies to government
users. The employee shall recommend statistical methods, their use and
interpretation, and shall propose programming procedures for the estimation
of various statistical measures.
The analytic tasks will include but are not limited to the following:
1. Review analytic plans and proposed key variables;
2. Conduct exploratory analyses including evaluation of outliers and
missing data;
3. Perform preliminary contingency table analysis to describe
relationships between variables of interest and covariates;
4. Identify and evaluate possible confounding variables;
5. Perform appropriate statistical tests associated with parameters
of interest; and
6. Conduct multivariate analyses including evaluation of the fit of
models.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Statistical Mathematics, or
other related field and/or discipline.
Experience: Four years experience; Knowledge of SAS, SUDAAN, and design
effects programs.
