Using a legal loophole, Stephanie Nicot (left) married her female partner,
Elise, in France's first state-sanctioned same-sex marriage.
Nicot is a transgender woman who did not file paperwork with French
officials after her gender-reassignment surgery. So when Nicot sought a
marriage license with Elise in the eastern city of Nancy, the couple was not
denied, as officials still categorized Nicot as male.
"It's a symbol for millions of gays and lesbians who would like to have the
same rights," Nicot said of her marriage.
France's constitutional court upheld the nation's ban on same-sex marriage
in January. |
