s*********e 发帖数: 15 | 1 My husband and I are PhDs in math. I am a postdoc now and he has a tenure-
track job after having postdoc himself. We have a toddler daughter and
another baby on the way. We are both interested in going into finance.
We are wondering if it would be better for us to go into an MFE program or
to just directly try to apply for jobs. Neither of us have finance
experience but my husband does have some programing experience.
Is it easier to find a job with an MFE degree (even if we already have PhDs)
? Are the salaries higher for MFEs? Would we easily get into an MFE program,
or would they not want to take us?
What should we do? Any advice would be great! |

become a quant is much much higher than someone who has PhD but couldn't
land a post doc job.
My suggestion would be for you guys to make sure you do like being quants to
begin with. Quant nowadays are pretty much programmers with a lot of
annoying petty tedious things to care about. And for most people, quant work
has little, if any, to do with finance. For the mediocre salary quants
receive right now, it may not make much sense to give up a tenure track job
and do quant.
To be honest, if I am to choose to become a programmer, I'd rather find a
silicon valley job for better life styles and for better pays.

it's typical to have a finance ph.d @ 28~30 and get an associate job in a
financial firms. this guy just spent 5 yrs more. it's still ok.
in addition, ph.d in engineering may have huge variation on compensation and
outlook. is it civil, chemical, biological, or petrolium, eletronical,
computer engineering?
for a civil engineering ph.d, spending 5 years to switch career is
definitely worth.
another point, this guy is now doing core biz. the future is much brighter.
in lz's case, it's quant developer, i suppose? it's still a tech role, which
makes big difference.

First, job security is important for families with children.
Second, as a math professor, he could choose to do research on finance.
There are many important problems in finance that need math ppl to figure
