【在 p**i 的大作中提到】 : My husband started working as a CRNA in February. He loves his job. CRNAs : have very high job satisfaction. You guys are in one of the best careers.
|
p**i 发帖数: 66 | 18 That's hard to compare because they are two different career paths and it
really depends on at which stage you are in your life. Overall, I think it
all boils down to the timing in your life--whether you are willing to go
through extra years of school and put your spouse and children through some
extra sacrifices.
For a 20 year old or someone who doesn’t mind going through med school and
residency for 7, 8 years later in their lives, I'd say go for the MD if you
want a doctor’s title and a higher salary. On the flip side, med school
takes probably three times the time and financial resources as a CRNA
program. So for people who have their eyes on an anesthesia career years
after they've graduated from college or after they've had another career,
CRNA is a very attractive choice.
Salary wise, of course anesthesiologists have higher salaries. They should
be because of the much longer training. The average starting salary for
anesthesiologists is over $200k and it gets to an average of probably over $
300k. The average starting salary for CRNAs is $150k (one of my husband's
friends just started in Chicago at $180k) and you can easily make over $200k
. One of my husband's colleague CRNAs told him that he made $60k last year
just from overtime alone--that is in addition to his salary. I'd say CRNAs
certainly make a better living than people in many other careers.
Work wise, as you guys should know, a lot of times CRNAs do pretty much the
same work as anesthesiologists, and in many cases, CRNAs work independently.
You guys make decisions about anesthesia methods, and what drugs to
administer and how much. You do epidural, spinal, general anesthesia,
intubation, extubation, A-line, nerve block, etc., and monitor and treat
breathing, blood pressure and other issues during surgeries, and you must
make sound decisions at moments of life or death. At one of the 3 hospitals
my husband's anesthesia group contracts with, there is only one CRNA there
at all times and no anesthesiologists. It's also the case in many rural
areas. I remember last year I told an anesthesiologist my husband was a CRNA
student and he told me himself that CRNAs do 98% of what anesthesiologists
do and he thinks CRNA is one of the best careers. Whether a CRNA does more
or less depend on the anesthesia group you're with. In some groups, only
anesthesiologists do hearts or nerve blocks, etc. , while in others, like my
husband's group, CRNAs do pretty much all kinds cases, including heart, OB
and nerve block.
Good pay aside, much of the high job satisfaction comes from your work. My
husband said he'd never known one CRNA who doesn't love his/her job. Your
work is interesting, challenging, and demands high level of critical
thinking, decision making, and a lot of skills and experiences. Everyday my
husband comes home and tells me how much he loves his job and the cases he
did during the day. Like yesterday, he did two open heart cases, one mitral
valve replacement and one atrial valve replacement. He came home from work
very happy because he's already doing hearts just a few weeks into his job
and he ran these difficult cases perfectly.
Just wanna share what I know based on personal experiences and hope this
helps. Those of you in CRNA programs, you have a bright future and a lot to
look forward to. And I know you'll love you job.
.

p**i 发帖数: 66 | 21 Thank you :-) I'm not in the medical field but very intrigued with what you
guys do. My husband likes talking to me about his cases everyday and I
really enjoy it and thus become quite well versed in all the terms and
procedures :-)
I'd say pick the one that allows you to do the most difficult and diverse
surgeries, preferably including hearts and OB. That's how my husband picked.
If you start your career with the most challenging cases, you can pretty
much go anywhere and do anything from there. The reason you wanna keep up
your OB skills is that you can pick up tons of locum tenens work for OB
cases, and as you probably already know, the pay for locum is $110/hour
pretty much everywhere.
Two of my husband's classmates went to a children's hospital. One of them
loves peds and wanna work with only children all her life. That's her
passion so that's fine. But the other went there solely because of the $50k
sign-on bonus (she must work there for 3 yrs). Everyone said that's a bad
move. As you know, kids are quite different from adults as far as anesthesia
goes. So after a few years, when she wants to switch back to adult cases,
her skills are gonna be quite rusty and she will have a hard time. Not to
mention, it's gonna be very difficult for someone working with kids only to
find part-time locum work.
I have to admit, at the beginning I wanted my husband to go to the children'
s hospital too, because, to be honest, the $50k sign-on bonus was quite
tempting. But I'm glad he didn't listen to me this time. He picked his
current job where his group work with 3 hospitals and he does all kinds of
cases. CRNAs there can do tons of overtime. And he said their patients tend
to be sicker so he got to learn how to handle all kinds of complications. So
I guess women, I mean me, can sometimes be sort of short-sighted! :-)
So I'd say start with the job that gives you the most difficult and diverse
cases. But if the cases are similar, then definitely pick the one with the
higher pay :-)
