CHINA REVEALS NEW STEALTH FIGHTER PROJECT
China is developing a new stealthy fighter jet aircraft and many of the
design concepts and components have already been created, senior sources
from the China Aviation Industry Corp I (AVIC I) have told Jane’s
Defence Weekly. This new aircraft is the first Eastern rival to the
West’s F/A-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to be put into
development, claim Chinese officials.
The aircraft - tentatively dubbed the J-X and possibly to receive the
service designation J-13A - has a similar planform to Lockheed Martin’s
F/A-22 Raptor, including low-radar-observable contours and internally
carried weaponry. However the wings are more conventional, and the
aircraft uses a single vertical tail fin.
Wind tunnel tests on several variants of the design are about to start.
Development of the engines and weapon subsystems has been underway for
some time, revealed the AVIC I source. Officials at AVIC I confirm that
the J-X could use the WS10A turbofan engine designed by the Shenyang
Liming Motor Company during its development and trials process. The
WS10-series engine completed air trials earlier this year with the Su-
27SK aircraft and will power China’s new J-10A fighter (yet to be
formally unveiled). The engine’s ‘thrust vectoring’ ability is tipped by
an industry source to “improve the J-10A’s short take-off and landing
performance and [enable it to] attain the maneuverability standard of
the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.”
AVIC I sources will not speculate on a first-test-flight date for the J-
X but we might expect it to be around the end of the decade, if the
project moves at the speed of China’s J-10A and J-8D projects. It
continues to receive extensive funding and support from President Jiang
Zemin, who would also like to see the project benefit from Russian and
Ukrainian technologies. (ENDS) |
