French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on Monday amid a
deluge of violent anti-tax riots in Paris led by the Gilets Jaunes, or the "
Yellow Jackets." Backlash against Macron's proposed eco-tax initially
sparked the violence, after which he killed the legislation, though
protesters have since called for his resignation, FOX News reported.
Macron said he wants to stop the "injustice" taking place and called for an
"immediate" improvement in salaries. He announced that the minimum wage will
increase, with no extra cost for employer, untaxed overtime pay, and an
extra end of year bonus. He called on "all employers who can" to give a
bonus to their workers which would be tax free.
"It's a historic moment," Macron said in a televised address to the nation.
The French leader said "all means" will be used to restore calm after the
disruptive protests that have deeply shaken the nation. He said there "no
indulgence" would be given to those behind the violence.
"We will respond to the economic and social urgency with strong measures, by
cutting taxes more rapidly, by keeping our spending under control, but not
with U-turns," Macron said.
“I take my share of responsibility," the leader said. "I have hurt some of
you with my words."
