ANN ARBOR, MI - Missing University of Michigan student Xin Rong has
officially been declared dead.
Court records show Washtenaw County Judge Julia Owdziej issued an order
Thursday, Oct. 5 establishing the death of Rong, 27, who disappeared in
March after renting a private plane and flying somewhere between Ann Arbor
and the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada. Rong was a doctoral
candidate in UM's School of Information.
The plane crashed in Canada late on March 15, but authorities did not find
Rong with the wreckage. They believe Rong jumped from the plane, but he was
still listed as missing or endangered by the Michigan State Police.
Surong Ruan, Rong's wife, filed a petition in May to have Rong declared dead
so she could move forward with settling Rong's estate and the airplane
rental's insurance company.
