It was actually very predictable, and boring. It went flat out to try to
please everyone... and probably will please very few.
The White House essentially took note of all the criticism it reicieved
throughout the week. Then, they sent out cabinet members (including
Clinton and Gates) over the weekend to float ideas and talking points.
Finally, you list out the pros and cons of the action, and have some
really good speach writers go down the list and try to put the best
response to each.
I was a little surprised at how carefully, and creatively, Obama was
attempting to use the terminology in the war powers act. For example, if
Lybian forces were allowed to continue, they would have committed an
atrocity, which would be morally objectionable to us as a country, and it
was therefore vital to our national interests to do strike them. It would
also harm our national interests for refugees from Lybia to flee to Egypt
and Tunisia.
It will be interesting to see how the Obama administration contrasts Lybia
with Iraq and Afganistan. Given his criteria, Obama should have supported
military action in both countries. | J*********r 发帖数: 5921 | 2 另一个老美的评论

From the President's speech tonight -
"As Commander-in-Chief, I have no greater responsibility than keeping this
country safe. And no decision weighs on me more than when to deploy our men
and women in uniform. I have made it clear that I will never hesitate to use
our military swiftly, decisively, and unilaterally when necessary to defend
our people, our homeland, our allies, and our core interests."
This is presidential boilerplate language when the US has engaged militarily
in an overseas conflict. What do they mean when they say that the US will
use the military to defend our "interests", "core interests" or "interests
around the world". I have no idea what they mean by our "interests". To me
that can mean just about anything. It sounds good and nobody questions the
meaning.
