z**********1 发帖数: 32 | 1 My girlfriend is graduating this summer from 安徽医科大学after successfully
completing her 7 year program (masters/md) focusing in oncology. She
currently has a offer to stay on as a full time staff member.
A few questions:
1) I've already researched the USMLE/ECFMG road and it is my understanding
that this would be about a 7~ year road. Is this correct? Last time I
checked, the percentage of Chinese IMGs were very low in the states, roughly
3.5%. What residency programs are more partially favourable to CMGs? Whats
life like for CMG residents?
2) Other than continuing down the MD route, what are other viable
alternatives? Nurse Practitioner? Physician Assistant? Changing career
focus to something else?
3) Has anyone successfully been able to come out on a 访问学者status? I've
been looking into this as well, however since neither of us know any
University professors, is there any other way to get this status? Are there
any other options? We looked into just a simple travel visa, but felt that
the chances of being rejected were very high.
4) Lastly, would anyone advise against her leaving? If so, what are you
reasons? For those of you that have done this, has it been worth it?
It would be great to hear back from any individuals/couples that have been
through this already.
Thanks for your time. |
D****r 发帖数: 162 | 2 Hello, Mr. Zhang:
I have written multiple posts on this in the medicalcareer forum. Too bad
they were all deleted and I was banned forever from the forum for it.
Too make a long story short, you are right in your assessment that it is 7 yr
minimum from opening the first page of 1st aid to finishing residency.
Good alternatives:
1. Pharmacy school. My friend who majored in French got her PharmD in 5 yrs
. It is a very good career. With a degree from the US, you dont have to
beg around as if you are a 2nd class citizen. $100K to count pills in a
pharmacy. $150K at a hospital. Could go to $200-250K to work for a
pharmaceutical company if she is good at people skills. This BTW is more
than what an average physician makes.
2.Dental school. $500K or more if she specializes. Just think about it.
It is mind blowing how much money the specialists make. $3000/hr for
implants. $1500/hr for root canal retreatment.
Of course, it is a moot point if she hates both career choices. If she is
open-minded, both are much better than going down the residency route.
Trust me on this.
Residency route is a beaten path. I know someone who matched into Yale in 1994 after finishing his Ph.D. It takes much longer time and involves more uncertainties. The only bright side is the tuition saving which is really penuts when you make $500K/yr as a periodontist or an endodontist.

hands. Continue applying for dental or pharmacy schools while studying for
USMLEs. Whichever comes first, he will jump on it. He gives himself more

s very difficult to get admitted. 2nd, dentist don't make nearly as much. an
endodontist is like a fellowship after dental school. to make 500k, you
most likely need to have a successful business - not just have a license.
I used to date a dentist, an american. I helped her run the practice and
know first hand how much they make.

some volunteer work, go get a master degree, have kids while sitting back
waiting for a school to take you. It is always good to have more options.
We all agree here: if you can get in either of the P, D or M, you are set
for life, right? Now, for the majority of us, whatever we can get our feet
into is good.

162 | 41 Here are two career ranking lists:
1.
A. Match.
B. Academia.
C. Industry.
D. D-school.
2.
A. D-school.
B. Match.
C. Industry.
D. Academia.
For the people who are given list 1, they spend 3 yrs preparing for the
tests with 40% chance to match in the first year. 40% of unmatched for 2
yrs in a row. After 6 yrs, looking back, they might tell themselves. WTF!
I could have graduated already from a dental school or a pharmacy school!!!!
For the people who are given list 2, they tell themselves, No money, No GC
in the next 2-3 yrs, move on the choice 2. Or they say, my spouse will get
GC in 2 yrs, hence student loans, let me try choice A. 2 months of
preparing for the entrance exam. And start to do some volunteering work
which is useful for match, English, and cultural adaptation. Then, he will
apply for a master degree, or a nursing degree. Two years later, cant get
in any dental or pharmacy school. Come back to prepare for USMLEs. Time
not wasted. Cause his English has improved, and have a couple of LORs in
hands. Continue applying for dental or pharmacy schools while studying for
USMLEs. Whichever comes first, he will jump on it. He gives himself more
outs by doing so. And he will thank me for it.

D****r 发帖数: 162 | 42 The bottom line is the initial investment in time and money and opportunity
cost is much lower for D or P. Not a big deal if it does not work out for
you.
The initial investment is much much higher for the USMLE route. If it does
not pan out, you will be hating life.

眼前利益, 生存权;
长远利益, 发展权;
上面的帖子真的都很有道理。 人在中国,有一份工作, 想的肯定是发展权; 如果这
个发展权是到美国发展,这个发展权就得重新调整了。
我个人意见, 眼光还是要长远一点, 做自己喜欢的事。
