sometimes I think in this way:
novel materials-->novel properties-->new applications
it really depends on the imagination of polymer chemists.

apply for a patent and then try to find some VC and sell your patent.

a***n 发帖数: 578 | 10 obviously you don't have any ideas about patents and enterprise.
If you only have a patent, the general price you sell is about 5K-20K.
But you have a startup by this patent, the price is at least multi-millions.
Another possibility is to sell license of patent. Then it will depend on the
income of product made by this patent. Generally it is about 1%-5%.
Ask your boss about this.

giant company wants to buy your patent (m

the boss wants publication, so the company wants to have it patented first.
what is the relationship between the professor, student, university and

I guess it is like this: the patent will belong to university; the university
will take care of the patenting affairs; the company will purchase the license
from the university; the university will distribute the benefits. is it right?

If company support the research, it has priority to own the license (not buy
it) and has right to ask you not sell to its competitor (but it can't monoploy
the license selling unless the company pay price to buy the patent).
The university own the certain percent of that patent (more than 90%). you and
your boss own remaining percent. So that you and your boss can have some
benefit if university sell the license to other companies.
However, if you setup a startup by this paten

what I told should be similiar with the one your mentioned "sell liccense

my boss's story is just like this:-) he sold his patent(maybe the license
of the patent) to Bayer, and Bayer sponsored a small company, he was the
advisor and member of the director board. he harvested a lot from this,
both fortune and fame.
right after his patent, another guy got the same thing from similar route.

China's law sounds ridiculous at that part.
