The material costs around $2000-$3000 with pre-milled tread returns (if you
buy oak treads, railings and newels but everything else pine. I don't think
you can use the existing treads under the carpet, they are probably just
pine...
It takes two people at least 5 days to finish the carpentry and painting job
. The labor cost really depends on where you live. If you want to do the
right job, you have to hire good carpenter to do the stair (e.g. you should
ask the carpenter to remove the old treads, instead of covering with new
ones). Good carpenter here is expensive. In NJ area,
they charge $200-$300 a day when they work for a stair contractor, and the
stair contractor will charge you more. Maybe you can save the painting part
, but I would still hire a professional painter to do the staining and
painting to make sure everything is done right.
Call a few stair contractors and get several estimates...
