你试试改xorg.conf:w:吧

However, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I couldnt' find anything defining resolution.
There is a display sub-session in screen session,
it only defines depth 24, no resolution. I tried to add Modes "1440x900",
no effect at all.

after i messed with xorg-drv-nvidia and nvidia driver from nvidia website, i
reinstalled f11.
Now i only have xorg-drv-nv. Before i know how to do it safely, i wouldn't
mess them again.
Or i will backup my system before i install them. give me some time. :)
With current nv driver, there is no .xsession-log in my home directory. only
a .xsession-error as following:
damn, it's 37MB, and all of them are:
** (gnome-settings-daemon:1706): WARNING **: Connection failed, reconnect

I have to use system-config-display to manually set monitor to LCD 1440x900,
then i can use this resolution as a normal user. But this didn't work with
nvidia driver.

nvidia 9500gt, I am using xorg-nv driver, 1024x768 resolution.
haven't used system-config-display to set 1440x900 yet.
(don't know if theese info will help or not, no idea aobut xorg....)

不过
(--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 1280x1024 (pitch 1280)
你自己去 xorg.conf 里设成 1440x900 好了
不过这个 VESA driver 硬件加速估计不太行
去看 man xorg.conf

LCD 1440x900, it will create a xorg.conf.
Do u want me to do that? (that's what they called xorg-conf-less?)
But it will give me another problem:
once i set 1440x900 using system-config-display, when computer
starts, the gdm login will still be 1024x768, only when i login using normal
user, resulution will be changed to 1440x900. if i logout, it will go back
to 1024x768 a

I made several screenshots too. It seems before i do anything, it can
automattically recognize my LCD name/model, but the only available
resolution are 1280x1024, 1024x768, 866x600. Then i changed the lcd to
general 1440x900 and produced xorg.conf.

现在的问题是，在xorg.conf里面没有任何地方定义分辨率，
但是如果我普通用户system-config-display，就可以看到4个分辨率了，1440x900,
800x600,... 我不需要改动啥就可以设宽屏了。
现在我用的是nv。
我的意思是如果我改用nvidia的驱动，尽管我在下面加上Modes "1440x900"，我还是看
不到这个分辨率的选项。所以我觉得xorg不是从这里读分辨率（这可能是以前的做法）

用nv的驱动，出下面的错，然后程序窗口里面的啥图像都显示不出来。
（intel显卡没问题）
换成nvidia的驱动也没问题但是就是没有宽屏。。。。

我把这个装上后重启电脑生成如下xorg.conf
我用nvidia x server settings设置，发现xserver configuration里面的display只有
1024x768己以下的分辨率。杂改？

问题解决了！
nv驱动有问题，俺运行abaqus给俺出x error啥的，导致程序屏幕美发输出。
结果把nvidia驱动装上但是继续用nv驱动就好了！怪异！
不装nvidia驱动就不行，只用nvidia驱动俺就调不出宽屏。。。
