The Ethereum Effect: Graphics Card Price Watch
The recent resurgence of cryptocurrency and the growing popularity of
Ethereum has led to a massive shortage in the GPU market. Prices are
oscillating wildly, and dozens of graphics card models are sold out. In
short, the mining craze is wreaking havoc on the graphics card market. Below
, we’ve begun tracking pricing and availability for the volatile graphics
card market.
The Price Of Gaming (Or Mining)
Most of the market has remained stagnant over the weekend, but the price of
the least expensive GTX 1060 climbed up from $259.99 to $299.99. However,
the GTX 1060 6GB , and the more powerful GTX 1070 remain in short supply.
Due to the scant availability of these cards, it appears that gamers and
miners have turned their attention to the previously unaffected GTX 1080 as
an alternative. As of July 7, you could purchase a GTX 1080 for as low as $
473, but now the least expensive GTX 1080 we can find will set you back $539.
AMD’s RX 580 has started to reappear on the market too, but in extremely
limited quantities. We found just two PowerColor RX 580s available for $499,
and those will likely be sold out soon (probably by the time you read this)
. This is the first available RX 580 cards we’ve seen in weeks, however, so
perhaps this is an indication that they’ll soon return to the market.
Europe has also been hit hard by the GPU shortage. Checking various retail
sites in Europe, several models of the AMD’s RX 580 and RX 570 GPUs are
sold out. This issue, like in the U.S., has persisted for several weeks now.
One German retailer, MindFactory.de, has opted to pull most listings of AMD
’s GPUs from its site due to the persistently poor availability. | a*o
