Long before i start thinking about playing golf, the expense is the biggest
concern i had for this sports. I start later this July and practice in the
driving range for maybe a dozen times and one time on a 9 hole 3 par course.
It didn't looks pretty.
Since i am working with moderate income.( This is maybe the reason i think
the golf is just for the old and rich, i play tennis for some years)
I would like to hear people share their view on this |

to spend a couple hundred bucks, you get to play enough golf for a month.
and you know, when travel, that same amount of money only covers
one day's expense.

within one year. playing golf costs money everyday, at least, for me.

willingness to spend money to play when you into this sports.
When unknownuser said golf is not expensive, i am just simply can't do that.
reason: a couple hundreads $ is more than i earn everyday. I may end up go
to drive range every weekend. But i hope still have fun at end. |

shopping的一个零头。如果你老婆打球上瘾了，那你就真正省钱了。比较可怕的是老婆
除了shopping没有其它爱好，那你就惨了。

壮年时拖家带口，有体能，没时间，不缺钱花；
年老时无忧无虑，体能差，有时间，钱花不完。
按说好多东西都应该等老了再玩，只恐怕到时候力不从心。所以年轻的时候借钱也得玩
，中年的时候要挤时间抓紧玩，否则这辈子基本没的玩。

alot,
1 K will keep me play tennis (which i play during summer)for 10 years assume
i broke string 3 times and buy new racket every year.
But i totally agree with one guy in earlier post, you only live your life
once.

Right I just use the cheapest 5 yuan nelson string.
Soundview is different. hehe.. He has been proved he is a living a rather
decent life right now and he could feel sorry about the life what he should
have had, but actually, it didn't happen.

a well balanced life when one is young - in which one works hard but does
not over work, enjoys life whenever possible, spends money rationally and
does not over-save, doesn't have to result in what you described as "the
life that one doesn't have anything in his 30's".

Actually, you are right. What I said, just represented my thought about my
elapsed 20's only.
Sometimes, I kept thinking, why I made the stupid decision to have a master
degree in China. You know what, the reason I gave myself 4 years ago was.. i
could play at this campus for serveral years.
Now i am preparing fot the gmat, and planning for another 3 years school

Playing golf is more promising than MBA as
a career.
Take it easy, have master degree is the choice of
no choice for most people. I even did not take
TOEFL and GRE when I out of college. Barely took
them after my master degree in China.

lets do the math.
court fee: say $6 per court per hour.
ball fee: say $3 per match
team fee: say $60 per team
we havent talked about cloth, shoes, sunglass..
and we assume you use same racket, same string ...
and we assume you dont play with tennis coach every week ...
and we assume you dont go to tennis camp ...
neither tennis resort for vacation.
you must be kidding to about 1k play tennis for 10 years. i would say 1k per
season.

i think when most people look back, they would regret about certain things.
at any given point in life, you can only look forward. there's no such thing
as "too old" so long as you are convinced that's what you need to do.

想少花费的话，高尔夫和网球在美国还是很便宜的。公立高尔夫球场一次十几刀就下得
来，球十刀可以买一堆二手的，杆子联球包二百刀可以买齐，十年下来也未必花多少钱
。网球也一样，公立球场基本不花钱，球可以去costco一次买一筐。
往贵了说，这两项运动都没顶。我们这里的网球教练是120刀一小时，我有朋友每周都
选课，其实说选课都过分，大多数时候就是花钱雇一个playing partner。冬天室内网
球场八十刀一小时，还要提前预约。高尔夫就更不用说了，一年花一两万刀非常容易。
所以花多少没关系，只要喜欢就好。

responses. So i need to thanks everyone who posted here.
My initial intention is to keep the cost of playing golf as low as possible.
Because i didn't make it very clear at first place that i didn't make as
much money as most of people here. But i want to play some golf and enjoy my
life just as i did with my tennis. I wish to find way to reduce the cost so
i still has some money for my retirement. |

suggested me to do. which make the golf is not very expensive, in par with
tennis and ski, about 1k per year each.
the problem you face is not "golf is a costy sport", but how much you can
spend on golf, because every sport is costly. as soundview pointed out, you
can choose to spend alot or less on golf as well as tennis, needless to say,
ski is in the same category.
