! What a man! He was the first man (on record) to sail single-handed
around the world. And his adventures, wow.
Your question - 'costing him a fortune'. He would have to spend millions of
dollars - a fortune - so that his boat would meet all the requirements of
round the world sailing.
Cost a fortune = a great deal of money.
You want a car? Do you buy a little one, like a Toyota, or an expensive one
like a Cadillac
