在美国职场N多年，读过无数同胞们的emails，不夸张的说一句，正确使用cannot的不

can not == can but choose NOT to
比如说，I cannot change the weather. That is because changing weather is
not possible, and I am not able to do that. 又比如说, I can go to the beach
tomorrow, or I can NOT go to the beach. I have a choice and I will choose
whichever I want tomorrow.

。至少在modern american english里，can not是不对的，至少是不common的。你可
以一直can not，can not的写下去，但你的文章要想在正式场合出现，can not一定会
给人改过来。
如你所说，语言是不断发展的，can not这个old用法已经发展为incorrect了。不信问
